Guiding Values and Beliefs
I believe that human beings have an incredible capacity for resilience and posttraumatic growth. I encourage clients to access their instinctive coping abilities, uncover and capitalize on strengths, and build flexibility that can foster a richer, more fulfilling, and purpose-driven life. The spirit of my approach is active and genuine and bolstered with a combination of science, creativity, and lots of humor.
I've had my fair share of heartbreak and challenges and have yearned to show up steadier for myself and my loved ones. Just like you, i'm on a journey and I see my clients as fellow travelers. I embrace imperfection and struggle as a natural state, and use them as an opportunity for learning, growth, and acceptance.
I offer a practical, goal-oriented style of therapy and am dedicated to cultivating a safe, nonjudgmental space. I am a self-described "straight-shooter" and tend to ask tough questions. I view our therapeutic relationship as a laboratory for understanding how other relationships function in your life. Together, we will focus on modifying thinking, behavior, and emotional responses so that ultimately, you can lead a life that is more consistent with your value system.
My Approach: Strengths Focused Evidence-Based Therapy
I employ evidence-based interventions, primarily cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and select other approaches specific to different specialty areas (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction). With CBT, the overarching objective is to help you work through difficulties by identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts and beliefs about yourself, other people, and the world. The term "evidence-based therapy" means that there is sufficient research (usually large clinical trials) to support the effectiveness of a therapy for specific conditions.
How Long Does Treatment Last?
I believe that achieving and maintaining change does not require being in years of therapy. Treatment with me tends to be targeted, pragmatic, and time-limited. The length of treatment depends on your unique goals and circumstances as well as the complexity of the difficulties you present. Therapy for stress and anxiety-related problems frequently ranges from 8-20 sessions. Therapy aimed at changing more chronic and entrenched habitual behaviors tends to require a longer duration of treatment complimented with after-care “booster” sessions.
